Just wear comfortable (and warm) clothing and flat-soled shoes.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hollywood Curling to Sponsor US Men’s Champion Team Shuster

Sponsorship to bring international exposure to efforts to build Los Angeles’ first dedicated curling facility

Los Angeles, December 3, 2015 – Hollywood Curling, the only place in Los Angeles County to offer the Olympic sport of curling, today announces its sponsorship of three-time Winter Olympic competitors and five-time US national champions Team Shuster.

The sponsorship is an effort to promote Hollywood Curling’s efforts to build the first dedicated curling facility in Los Angeles. The club has found a potential site in the San Fernando Valley and is currently negotiating lease terms, and kicked off fundraising efforts with a raffle that raised over $24,000 this summer. “Having a dedicated curling facility in Los Angeles would not only be a major milestone for the sport within the US, but it would connect with our community in a way that no other sport can, appealing to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. This sponsorship opportunity is a great way of raising local and national awareness of our efforts,” says Hollywood Curling vice president Liza Beres.

This is not the first connection between the Minnesota- and Wisconsin-based Team Shuster and Hollywood Curling. Team member Tyler George has competed in Hollywood Curling’s annual Blockbuster Bonspiel tournament for several years and last year became an official member of Hollywood Curling to show his support. “From the time I first came out to Los Angeles to support the cause, I've been welcomed with open arms into the Hollywood Curling community. I consider the members family to me, and partnering with them as our title sponsor is a perfect match. In garnering exposure for their push for dedicated ice and helping us in our own push to get America on the medal stand at worlds, the partnership is mutually beneficial. I couldn't be prouder to rep the Hollywood logo and join with my friends in our efforts to reach our goals!,” George says.

Three time Olympian and Olympic Bronze medalist John Shuster is also no stranger to Hollywood.  “I am very excited to be partnering with the Hollywood Curling Club.  I vividly remember the first day I met any of its members in 2009, when I happened to be in the Los Angeles area. Although I had never met any of its members, upon arriving I was welcomed like an old friend, sparking friendships that have grown into lifelong bonds.  That's the epitome of curling, and the Hollywood Club really exemplifies that through their love for our sport.”

As a part of the sponsorship, Team Shuster will wear Hollywood Curling logos on their jackets and shirts throughout the 2016 season, including high-profile events like the Continental Cup in Las Vegas and National Championships in Jacksonville, FL, as well as a tournament in December that will be filmed for Curling Night in America, which will be televised nationally on NBCSN Friday nights from Jan. 8 to Feb. 26. In addition, team members will mention the club’s fundraising efforts in media interviews and on social media.

A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Hollywood Curling is now accepting tax-deductible donations toward its dedicated ice project at hollywoodcurling.org.

Team Shuster is among the premier men’s curling teams in the United States. It won the 2015 national championship and placed fifth in this year’s world championship tournament. Team captain John Shuster is a three-time Winter Olympian, having represented the US at the last three games, including a bronze medal-winning performance in 2006. The other members are Tyler George, an elite curler who had won the US national championship once and placed second three times before joining the team; Matt Hamilton, a rising star who’s a two-time US junior champion and won the Junior World Championships in 2008; and John Landsteiner, who’s been playing with Shuster since 2012, including at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

    About the sport of curling

The popular sport of curling, a game in which 42-pound granite stones are hurled down a 150-foot sheet of ice at a central target while teammates use brushes or brooms to sweep the ice in the path of the stone, has seen a tremendous increase in popularity in the US in the past decade. Owing large in part to the televised coverage during the Winter Olympics in Torino in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, Americans have been flocking to the sport with intrigue and fascination. The sport has seen explosive expansion in recent years, particularly in the area of arena clubs like Hollywood Curling, which share the ice with hockey players and figure skaters.

Combining in-school floor curling curriculum with practical on-ice experience, our goal is to bring young curlers and their families to the sport, and to foster a life long love of the game.

    Dedicated Ice Update

    Hi curlers,

Well, as you know, we launched our dedicated ice campaign in ernest this summer when we ran our Viking River Cruise raffle. It was a successful promotion that raised $24,000 for dedicated ice in southern California. Well done!

The Board of Directors and the Long Term Planning Committee have been working hard to keep things moving along since our last member meeting in April. We’ve continued to work on the San Fernando option while exploring other options along the way. (Members, if you need a refresher, there's information posted in the members only forum).

Here’s where we’re at right now:

We’ve been negotiating with the prospective landlords in San Fernando over the past few months and are getting very close on terms. It’s a very exciting time as it means once we agree on terms of a Letter of Intent that outlines the expectation of both parties, we can enter negotiations on an actual lease. So far, the process has been pleasant as the landlords are keen to work with us and come up with some creative solutions. Things are on the right track, and we're feeling very positive about it.

We’ve also been working with the city council in San Fernando, who are excited about the prospect of us coming to town. We are exploring different ways we can work together and leverage our respective connections and resources to bring this unique activity to the city.

All in all, very positive, and the wheels are in motion. In the coming weeks we will host further info sessions to update everyone and answer questions. We want to be sure we’re all on the same page as we move forward.

Next up, we have the LA2050 grant challenge. We’ll be asking you to share your #ConnectWithCurling moments on social media. Did you meet a friend or the love of your life? Did you collaborate on a project with your curling pals? Has volunteering been rewarding for you?

Also: If you’re interesting in being more involved, we can always use more help. Let us know!
