Wil Wheaton, Jake Thomas, More Stars Take to the Ice for Celebrity Curling Game July 2

Charity match pairs up Hollywood stars, best-in-the-world curlers to benefit youth sports

(Valencia, Calif.) June 20, 2016 – Most Southern Californians won’t be spending their Fourth of July weekends on ice. But from July 1 to 3, the coolest place to be will be Ice Station Valencia, as Hollywood Curling’s annual Summer Blockbuster Bonspiel brings curlers from around the world for a weekend of fun and competition.

Anybody can take part by watching some of their favorite Hollywood celebs take to the ice during a free celebrity match for charity on July 2! Confirmed participants include:

    • Wil Wheaton, child star turned geek icon best known for Stand By Me, Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Big Bang Theory
    • Scott Whyte, best known as the iconic Gunnar Stahl in D2: The Mighty Ducks
    • Jake Thomas, who starred as the title character’s little brother, Matt, on Lizzie McGuire
    • Thom Rivera, who has appeared on hit shows including Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Telenovela and New Girl

Each Hollywood celebrity will be paired up with a curling expert, including Olympians (Mike Harris, who won a silver medal for Canada in Nagano in 1998; and Debbie McCormick, captain of the US women’s team in 1992, 2002, 2010 and 2014), national champions (Becca Hamilton, who won in 2014, and her brother Matt Hamilton, who won in 2015) and other world-class performers (top American curler Jamie Sinclair, top Canadian curler Colin Hodgson, and Director of High Performance for USA Curling Derek Brown).

The celebrity game will begin at 8 PM at Ice Station Valencia, 27745 Smyth Drive in Valencia. Admission is free, but raffles, a silent auction, merchandise and more will raise funds for School of Rocks, Hollywood Curling’s youth program that brings the sport to local schools. Friendly volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and explain the intricacies of the game.

Now in its eighth year, the Summer Blockbuster Bonspiel (curling tournaments are called bonspiels) will feature 32 teams and 128 athletes from as nearby as Los Angeles and as far away as Ireland. Matches throughout the tournament will also be open to the public for no charge.

Summer Blockbuster Bonspiel matches will begin at 8 AM each day, with games continuing late into the evening. The opening ceremony will be at 3 PM on Friday, July 1. The championship match begins at 11 AM on Sunday, July 3, with trophies and medals given out during the awards ceremony at 1:45 PM. All games will take place at Ice Station Valencia, 27745 Smyth Drive in Valencia.

    About the sport of curling

The popular sport of curling, a game in which 42-pound granite stones are hurled down a 150-foot sheet of ice at a central target while teammates use brushes or brooms to sweep the ice in the path of the stone, has seen a tremendous increase in popularity in the US in the past decade. Owing large in part to the televised coverage during the Winter Olympics in Torino in 2006, Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, Americans have been flocking to the sport with intrigue and fascination. The sport has seen explosive expansion in recent years, particularly in the area of arena clubs like Hollywood Curling, which share the ice with hockey players and figure skaters.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hollywood Curling to Sponsor US Men’s Champion Team Shuster

Sponsorship to bring international exposure to efforts to build Los Angeles’ first dedicated curling facility

Los Angeles, December 3, 2015 – Hollywood Curling, the only place in Los Angeles County to offer the Olympic sport of curling, today announces its sponsorship of three-time Winter Olympic competitors and five-time US national champions Team Shuster.

The sponsorship is an effort to promote Hollywood Curling’s efforts to build the first dedicated curling facility in Los Angeles. The club has found a potential site in the San Fernando Valley and is currently negotiating lease terms, and kicked off fundraising efforts with a raffle that raised over $24,000 this summer. “Having a dedicated curling facility in Los Angeles would not only be a major milestone for the sport within the US, but it would connect with our community in a way that no other sport can, appealing to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. This sponsorship opportunity is a great way of raising local and national awareness of our efforts,” says Hollywood Curling vice president Liza Beres.

This is not the first connection between the Minnesota- and Wisconsin-based Team Shuster and Hollywood Curling. Team member Tyler George has competed in Hollywood Curling’s annual Blockbuster Bonspiel tournament for several years and last year became an official member of Hollywood Curling to show his support. “From the time I first came out to Los Angeles to support the cause, I've been welcomed with open arms into the Hollywood Curling community. I consider the members family to me, and partnering with them as our title sponsor is a perfect match. In garnering exposure for their push for dedicated ice and helping us in our own push to get America on the medal stand at worlds, the partnership is mutually beneficial. I couldn't be prouder to rep the Hollywood logo and join with my friends in our efforts to reach our goals!,” George says.

Three time Olympian and Olympic Bronze medalist John Shuster is also no stranger to Hollywood.  “I am very excited to be partnering with the Hollywood Curling Club.  I vividly remember the first day I met any of its members in 2009, when I happened to be in the Los Angeles area. Although I had never met any of its members, upon arriving I was welcomed like an old friend, sparking friendships that have grown into lifelong bonds.  That's the epitome of curling, and the Hollywood Club really exemplifies that through their love for our sport.”

As a part of the sponsorship, Team Shuster will wear Hollywood Curling logos on their jackets and shirts throughout the 2016 season, including high-profile events like the Continental Cup in Las Vegas and National Championships in Jacksonville, FL, as well as a tournament in December that will be filmed for Curling Night in America, which will be televised nationally on NBCSN Friday nights from Jan. 8 to Feb. 26. In addition, team members will mention the club’s fundraising efforts in media interviews and on social media.

A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, Hollywood Curling is now accepting tax-deductible donations toward its dedicated ice project at hollywoodcurling.org.

Team Shuster is among the premier men’s curling teams in the United States. It won the 2015 national championship and placed fifth in this year’s world championship tournament. Team captain John Shuster is a three-time Winter Olympian, having represented the US at the last three games, including a bronze medal-winning performance in 2006. The other members are Tyler George, an elite curler who had won the US national championship once and placed second three times before joining the team; Matt Hamilton, a rising star who’s a two-time US junior champion and won the Junior World Championships in 2008; and John Landsteiner, who’s been playing with Shuster since 2012, including at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
